Life in a Day Project Mantis

Life in a Day Project Mantis is Part 2 of my contribution for the largely user-generated global experimental documentary by Ridley Scott called “Life in a Day” – after my silent, short yet spectacular Part 1: Moon.

While I will go a little into the circumstances leading up to Part 2, you may want to click on the picture to see it on YouTube.

Life in a Day Project Mantis

Life in a Day Project Mantis did not happen just like that either; it was not planned. I was prepared, yes… but I very consciously let my intuition guide me.

After the spectacular encounter in the early morning hours, I was happy to get back inside real quick as it was cold, the wind started howling and with it came that icy drizzle from the sea that feels like a whip in the face. Not even a cat would go outside – so we were all very happy to stay inside.

While the initial plan of hiking into the mountains was completely shattered and the day looked rather gloomy, thoughts of possibly putting together something interesting for the 24th July 2010 after all kept nagging me. So my creative muscle took over as I started designing some thoughts that came into my mind, all circulating around the expressions “Semantic”, Semiotics”, “Sign”, Signal”, “Significance” … for instance the significance of this special day – the 24th July 2010 – and of course and most importantly: Semiomantics!

Our Semiomantics – the fastest Ferrari on the Internet highway, the Testa Googli that amazes us every day anew – just see further down today’s results of today’s article!

Funny enough, however, something squeezed inbetween and it was… a mantis. I thought of a Praying Mantis… for whatever reason – it was there. I noticed that I had not seen any yet this year… I thought of these interesting creatures that are masters of camouflage, have a 180 degree radius of sight, and that are of quite some symbolic value in terms of peace, calmth, meditation and thoughtfullness when it comes to decisions.

However… they are carnivorous, they even attack and catch little humming birds, frogs, mice… and insects anyway of course – they kill with a lethal bite into the neck and one could take ‘praying’ very well for ‘preying’.

And although their movements are extremely slow and remind me of  Tai Chi, when in danger they can disappear like a flash of lightning.

So this entity – as it felt rather large as a presence – seemed to peep over my shoulder and the “c” in Semiomantics slipped away and there it was written: mantis!

How I would get from my graphic design to any filming work for ‘Life in a Day’ I had no clue… as even at lunch time it looked like the day would never arise…

But, suddenly, just after 2 pm the thick black clouds ripped apart and a glorious ray of light broke into my secret garden… Little drops glittering everywhere… As the sun dried the dripping wetness and fresh fragrances rising from the earth dissolved into the air, the first bees buzzed towards their colorful targets.

Grabbing my digital camera, I knew it was now or never… I knew it wouldn’t last – but this was the time… the time to follow the call of the mantis. I went out with a clear target: to find the Mantis!

Would I do so? I will tell you more in my next article.

Life in a Day Project on Google

As usual, let’s look at what the ensemble of my recent posts achieved on Google over the past 2 days?

Earlier today, I reported that so far position 22 out of  164,000,000 search returns had been achieved… yet we expected to do better due to the power of a Semiomantics Script and smart Editing and Website Publishing.

Now, a few hours later… where are we now? Did we get to Google Top 10? Yes… indeed! We did! A whopping position 5… and this in good company!
